Gen Z Gets Beef Backstage Pass
The up-and-coming generation of food consumers, Gen Z, is more interested than ever before in where their food comes from and how it’s produced. Transparency in food and agriculture is key. That’s why I was proud to be part of the Best Food Facts Taste Tour in and around San Antonio, Texas, where Gen Z foodies and farmers were given a backstage pass to a cattle ranch, a meat counter, a grocery store, and a chef-guided culinary experience. They asked questions about how livestock are raised, what cattle eat, beef sustainability, and so much more. As a livestock veterinarian, I loved hearing their questions and learning from them.

What Does Antibiotic Stewardship Mean?
We hear a lot about antibiotic resistance and calls for antibiotic stewardship these days, and rightly so. It’s a concern I share as a mother of three great kids and as a veterinarian with over 20 years of experience. After being asked by several people what antibiotic stewardship really means, I decided to create a video about it and tackle the topic in a post.
The Role of Nutritional Specialty Products
Are you a believer in natural remedies to stay healthy? Well, you’re not alone and the company may be unexpected: nutritional products are gaining popularity to protect animal health. There are some great side benefits, too. I talk about more about it in my video.
Why are Antibiotics Used to Prevent Disease
Is it responsible to use antibiotics to prevent disease? It’s a fair question that I’ve been asked several times. I’ll ask a question in response: is it responsible to allow an animal to suffer if you know you could prevent that suffering? It comes down to ethics, as I explain in a new video.
Role of Vaccines
As a mother of three, Dr. Dorman leads an annual family ritual when winter rolls around to get their flu shots, which are vaccines to help protect us from the flu. As a veterinarian, she can tell you that vaccines are used in animals for the same reason: to protect from diseases that cause pain and suffering or to lessen their effects. In this video, Dr. Dorman explains the use of vaccines and the link to food safety.
Why I Do What I Do
People today have many questions about where their food comes from. Curiosity is the driver that leads people to explore, ask questions, and ultimately to understand something new. During Dr. Leah Dorman’s more than two decades as a veterinarian, she has come to realize how much she enjoys helping satisfy peoples’ curiosity about animal agriculture. In this video, Dr. Dorman explains why she chose this path.
The Nexus of Animal Health, Food Safety and Human Health
In this Oct. 20, 2016, webinar, Leah Dorman, D.V.M., and Steve Solomon, M.D., share some of the same concerns and priorities, including most importantly that antibiotics must be used responsibly in both human and animal medicine. They also cover changes underway in how antibiotics are being used on farms, the risks, as well as “superbug” concerns and the broader global picture with regard to antibiotic resistance.

Antibiotic Resistance Part IV: Proper Kitchen Techniques
Antibiotic resistance is a concern for many of us, so what can we do about it? Our four-part video series on antibiotic resistance takes a closer look at the topic from the farm to the kitchen. Antibiotic resistance is a topic of concern for many of us. In our four-part video series, we tackle the subject from the farm to your kitchen. In part three, food blogger Alice Choi enlists the help of registered dietitian Jen Haugen to help navigate the grocery aisles. Antibiotic Resistance Part II: Antibiotic Use in Food Animals
In part one of our four-part series on antibiotics, food blogger Alice Choi spoke with an expert about antibiotic resistance. While we know that the discovery and use of antibiotics represents one of the greatest human and veterinary medical advances in history, recent concerns about overuse have people wondering about the impact on human health of use of antibiotics in animals raised for food. For answers on antibiotic use in livestock production, Alice Choi visited with Jeff Bender, DVM, MS, DACVPM, with the Center for Animal Health and Food Safety at the University of Minnesota.
